An English Breakfast
With the hype of the Royal Wedding of Price William a couple of stores in Sri Lanka have decided to follow through. Coco Veranda, my favourite hang out spot has decided to be one of the few. They have incorporated an English Breakfast into their menu.
Previously they had something called the Big Breakfast which consisted of Scrambled Eggs, Sausages, French Toast and a side of fruit. It was priced at Rs. 400 and was available in the mornings. Now they’ve decided to upgrade it and introduce the big breakfast. Which looks something like this:
The all new English Breakfast consists of the following:
- Eggs. Either Fried/Scrambled or Cheese Omelet
- Baked Beans
- Sausages
- Chicken Ham, which is wrapped around the sausage for presentation.
- Toast, with butter and jam.
- A pot of Tea or Coffee
As you can see, I decided to go for the Cheese Omelet which sounded more appealing. It was good with sliced green chillies to give it that extra punch. The Baked Beans wasn’t extraordinary, since Heinz cans are the only source of Baked Beans in breakfast menus in Colombo. The Sausage was a meaty Chicken Sausage with a crispy slice of Chicken Ham wrapped around it. I like my toast lightly toasted with butter on it. I really didn’t apply the jam as I’d rather use the bread to consume the rest of the plate. But the Jam was pretty decent. The pot of tea or coffee is enough for 2 and a half cups. Milk is provided as well.
The total cost of the English Breakfast is Rs. 690 including the Coffee or Tea. In my opinion a lazy Sunday morning spent at Coco Veranda with an English Breakfast and a good friend will result in a full stomach while you engage yourself in good conversation.
The Best Budget Biriyani

I’m a muslim and thus have encountered enough Biriyani in my time. But what if your a non-muslim who strangely is obsessed with Biriyani and Wattalapan (which are meh cases for us), where do you go?
Everyone says go to Pilawoos. But all they do is make good Kottu and Ice Milo. But Biriyani? Please. You could go to some place like the Hilton or the Holiday Inn (The Ramada now), and pay around Rs. 500/= for a Biriyani. But if your wife has taken the Benz and you don’t have time to sit down and wait for the chefs at Holiday Inn to use forbidden/rare herbs to spice up the biriyani then your better off heading to Elite.
Located just off Thumulla, opposite Dilly’s is Elite Indian Family Restaurant. Pretty nice place. Loads of waiters but service is not always good. The above Biriyani only costs Rs. 240 and is very fast and convenient for a quick take away during lunch time. A must try out if your looking for a good value biriyani!
Also if you are at Elite try out the Nasi Goreng. My favourite!
Colombofest
So, just got back from Colombofest at Waters Edge! The food was good, and the price quite decent. Here are the essential details:
- Location: Waters Edge
- When: 26th – 27th of November, from 7 pm to Midnight
- Type of food: Barbecue
- Price: Rs. 1500/= nett
So, what’s the deal with the event? Well apparently Keells is launching their Gourmet range of sausages at Waters Edge, and this is the launch event. Therefore, in addition to the food, they’ve also got some games as well as a live band (Not all that great) and a DJ (Good!). The drinks are also at discount price, though I didn’t actually have any of them.
Onwards to the food! Overall, the food was quite decent. They’ve got a nice spread of food, from about 4 different types of sausages to spare ribs, lamb / pork chops and fish fingers (With nice Tar Tar sauce!). They’ve also got macaroni and rice, but personally if you’re there for the meat, don’t go for the macaroni or rice and enjoy the meat instead! I would recommend the Garlic Chicken Sausage, Pork Chops and Tar Tar sauce.
For dessert there are banana fritters & ice cream, and golden syrup and icing sugar to top it off with. I’d recommend having a banana fritter with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, a bit of golden syrup, and dusted off with some icing sugar.
All in all a nice buffet, and quite decently priced. Would recommend going for it if you can!
A few words of caution to those of you ladies planning on going there: Do not wear heels. Mud (In the car park) + heels = Disaster
… And then there were two!
When I heard that Ahamed here was putting up a food blog, I thought to myself “Whoa! Now there’s something I wouldn’t mind getting involved in”, and here we are!
I’m not really your average must blog / must tweet type, usually because I can never think of something to blog about and I lose interest very quickly. However, as of the last few years I’ve been out and about trying all sorts of different food mainly due to the influence of my friends and the fact that I love food
. So I figured to myself that here was a topic I could probably blog about.
I’m ever up to trying something new (Within reason – mine, not yours
). Unlike Ahamed however, most of my gastronomical experiences are in Colombo as I’m not fortunate enough to travel as much as Ahamed. So for those of you looking for things closer to Colombo, hopefully I’ll be able to provide you a tip or two
.
Right then, here’s to hoping you lot’ll enjoy my suggestions on food and drink! Ahamed, thanks again for the awesome opportunity – This should be fun
The Best Pizza in SL – Ocean Side Pizza
I discovered Ocean Side Pizza last year on another one of my trips to Unawatuna. Located on the outskirts of Galle town about a 100 meters just before the Light House hotel and about 110 kilometers from Colombo. Every time the cricketers are in Galle for a cricket match they end up having a meal here. The walls are adorned with pictures of the cricketers and especially Murali whom the staff have a liking to since his pictures dominate the rest.
If its meat, they put it on the pizza. Ranging from traditional chicken to full prawns their pizzas are all “meated” up to go! We normally go for a Family Supreme which consists of various meats such as shredded chicken, prawns and sausages. The most number of staff I’ve seen there has been 2. One guy who handles the cash and the multi-tasking waiter/chef. The don’t actually serve pizza only. The serve a wide variety of dishes ranging from Burgers to Pasta to Rice. After tasting most of it. The Pizza is still the best.
They have two different seating arrangements. Inside or Outside. Depending on the weather you choose. It’s hardly ever crowded so its practically like you have the place for yourself.
The Pizza is thin crust with a heavy topping. The focus so much on the topic that it fills you up very easily. Order a drink but don’t drink to much of it. Cause it’ll just be a waste. Speaking of drinks alcohol is allowed. I remember them having a rule where you can bring alcohol until 8PM. Afterwards I guess you got to buy it from inside. But all they got is mainly beer.
At the back of the place they have a couple of notice boards with pictures of the tsunami time. This is an attraction mainly for the tourists to see but its quite educational to look at. The pictures are pretty much 18+ rated as you can see overturned buses, and ravaged buildings and a corpse or two in certain pictures. Ocean Size Pizza had been hit and they had to rebuild it to what it is today.
I urge you all to make a pit stop at Ocean Side Pizza. Or even drive down there on a Sunday to eat its magnificent Pizza. You’ll never find anything as good as this anywhere in Sri Lanka. Pizza Hut? Yeah Right. Ocean Side Pizza all the way.
Here’s a picture as a parting gift:
Coming up : The location of the Hot Butter Cuttle Fish Burger revealed!
The Rose Tinted Bite
This blog will be the beginning of me sharing my appetite with you all. Here you will find posts about the great hidden food in Colombo and I will tell you where you can find it.
I’ve always had these moments where I would crave some form of food and will go to great means to get this food. These “Harold and Kumar” moments sometimes expensive on the wallet but are worth it in pure bliss.
If your craving something, who knows. You might find it here.
